Cuffley Tiebreak Singes League – By Jon Larg

As some of you may know, I’ve been keen to get a regular singles competition up and running in the club. Since I’ve been a member, the club has always been focused on social doubles. Singles only really comes into action during the Main or Vets tournament, otherwise its cast aside which I feel is a great shame.

So, thinking cap on! How do I create an interesting competition that isn’t physically demanding, anyone can participate in,
and can be played at any time and fit around the social tennis? Tiebreaks!

Matches are best of three 10 point tiebreaks. Play a match and you earn 1 point, (important to reward effort!), win one tiebreak you earn 2 points and win a match is 3 points. Everyone is in the same league and you aim to play everyone in the league, but due to differing availabilities, you may miss certain people, so at a minimum, you must play at least half of the opponents in the league before a repeat match. You can play as many matches as you want over a 6-8 week period and the top 3 earn certificates and some prize money.

The first season ended on 19th Feb, and Andrew Jones was our first champion, (see noticeboard for final league table). I’ve created a newsletter for the league too which is also on the noticeboard, so those of you interested please take a look. The 2nd season is now up and running. If you would like to be included in the next season please call/text me on 07856 721800.
