Our Club

Northaw and Cuffley Lawn Tennis Club

Northaw & Cuffley Lawn Tennis Club was established in 1937, originally in someone’s back garden and then on the site of King George V Playing Fields on the outskirts of Cuffley Village.

There were four clay courts and a small club house. In the late 1980’s a new clubhouse was built along with a new Court. Floodlights were installed and artificial grass surfaces were laid on all 5 courts. In the early 1990’s the Club acquired two further courts from the Northaw and Cuffley Parish Council providing the Club with a total of seven courts. In 2001 the clubhouse was refurbished and extended to provide a larger area for general activities. In 2008 the court surface configuration was re-arranged to provide six with artificial courts and one hard surface.

This is the current configuration with seven courts available for all year round play. One of these courts is available for public play through an agreement made together with the Parish Council.

The Club is managed by a Committee elected for a period of one year at the AGM held in November. All adult playing full members are able to vote and speak at the AGM.

Club Mark accreditation was originally achieved in 2008 and this continues to be the good practice guidance for the operation of the Club. Rules are set at the AGM and ground rules are set by the Committee.

Currently we have six courts with artificial grass surface and one hard court. It is The Committee’s responsibility that these courts remain playable are are maintain throughout the year.

The Membership includes free use of floodlights and new tennis balls are provided for each adult playing session. The playing facilities at the Club are able to support 350 adult players in accordance with LTA guidelines. The current membership for all categories is 440 which includes adults, children, and social members.

To support this level of membership there is a wide ranging tennis programs catering for members of all ages and standards. A specific session for juniors on Friday nights is organised by the Club coaches with adult sessions for men, ladies and mixed on specific week nights and weekends. There are also sessions throughout the day midweek for older members and organised coaching sessions for schools and groups of children from the age of 3 years.

The Club is active in the Herts tennis community taking part in several leagues and interclub tournaments. There are many adult men’s, ladies and mixed teams together with children from the age of 6 years who represent the club in these fixtures.

There are also several internal club tournaments arranged throughout the year. We have main singles, doubles and mixed tournaments for adults with a finals day in June and also a  junior tournament with their own independent finals day. In addition we hold a veteran tournament, a handicap tournament, and a junior tournament in the October half term week which is open to outside entrants.

The catchment area from which our membership is primarily drawn includes Cuffley , Northaw, Potters Bar, Cheshunt and North Enfield. There are tennis clubs in Potters Bar, Hatfield, Cheshunt, Enfield  and tennis excellence centres such as Queenswood and Gosling. All of these provide keen competition for club membership at various standards, although the club also aims to work with many of these organisations to further promote the wider goals of tennis in our community.

Ample car parking is available at our club and there are no dwellings in close proximity so the use of floodlights and social events do not impact on neighbouring residents. The spacious clubhouse has a large separate bar area, a fully equipped kitchen, Sky TV table tennis and dart board which all support the wider social life of the club.
